After reporting HD game operating losses of ¥8.1 billion (around $51.9 million), Square Enix is "aggressively pursuing" a new multiplatform strategy. PlayStation has enjoyed having new Final Fantasy games launch as console-exclusive titles for many years, but it appears that could now be coming to an end as Square Enix looks to increase its profits.

As revealed in Square Enix's new medium-term business plan, the company is changing its strategy for HD games. Going forward, the company will "shift from quantity to quality and evolve to deliver a variety of contents that ensure 'fun' all over the world."

Part of the shift in strategy includes a new focus on multiplatform releases, presumably to maximize the sales of its games as it slows down production of its games to focus on quality. This move includes its AAA catalog of games, so we could potentially see future Final Fantasy games launch on Xbox alongside other platforms.

"For HD titles, the Group will aggressively pursue a multi-platform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs," Square Enix says. "Especially, in regards to major franchises and AAA titles including catalog titles, it will build an environment where more customers can enjoy our titles."

Square Enix's report for the financial year ending March 31, 2024, reveals that although Digital Entertainment sales rose by 2.6%, its profit dropped by 15.8%. Overall, the company's HD games racked up operating losses of ¥8.1 billion (around $51.9 million) over its last financial year, despite Square Enix releasing Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Both games launched as PlayStation exclusives, cutting out a huge number of potential sales from other platforms, so it comes as no surprise that its execs are now reevaluating its multiplatform strategy.
